Across from Avignon, in the heart of Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, the Charterhouse was founded in the 14th century by Pope Innocent VI. Occupied by Carthusian monks until the 18th century, it has become today a Cultural Meeting Centre and a partner to the Avignon Festival. Its three cloisters, surrounded by forty cells and gardens, its frescoed chapel and church made it the largest Charterhouse in France.
